Amy Polumbo, better known as Miss New Jersey, will get to keep her crown, officials decided this Thursday. Polumbo recently went public with pictures that show her acting, “not in a ladylike manner.” Polumbo, clearly thrilled with pageant officials decision, blew kisses to her audience as she said, “I’m very happy about this decision, and I look forward to resuming my agenda as Miss New Jersey.” Polumbo did apologize for the stir the pictures had created and thanked the pageant board for its support. She also offered thanks of a higher order. “I want to thank the public,” said Polumbo. “I also want to thank God for getting me through this.”
The photos seem a good bit less provocative than other leaked pictures we’ve seen, most notably those of American Idol contestant Antonella Barba. Polumbo’s pictures include a shot of her boyfriend biting her breast through her shirt, and another of Polumbo riding in a limousine with her legs spread in the air. The last shot shows Miss New Jersey in a Halloween costume holding two pumpkins over her breasts. The 22-year old Miss America representative was also criticized for pictures in which she was drinking, though she claimed the shots were taken when she was of legal age.
The photos were reportedly set to be leaked by a person or persons claiming to be The Committee to Save Miss America. The entire pageant industry has come under close public scrutiny, as more and more of its contestants have leaked photos, addictions, and various other imperfections. Hollywood jumped into the fray with the indie release gone super hit Little Miss Sunshine, which attempts to crack the porcelain face of youth pageantry. Amy Polumbo said she was comfortable with the pictures, but she did have concern for the ways in which the shots might raise someone else’s eyebrows.
